AIGA Seattle Changemaker Series – keynote speaker
Great Idea! Now What? – workshop
The Changemaker initiative produced by the Seattle Chapter of the AIGA, pairs local designers with local non-profits to impact positive social change in the community. Mark gave the opening keynote for the 2016 kickoff event which introduced the design community to organizations that were tackling homelessness. While in Seattle, Mark lead a two-day workshop at the University of Washington entitled “Great Idea! Now What?.” The session, for senior and graduate students, focused on how to develop designer-led social entrepreneurial projects.

Judging for the 21st annual Worldstudio AIGA Scholarship Program took place at the School of Visual Arts. This year the jury awarded $51,000 to twenty-one students from colleges and universities across the country.

James Beard Awards – event and award
Worldstudio co-founder David Sterling’s epic, six-and-a-half pound, 576 page book, Yucatán: Recipes from a Culinary Expedition won two prestigious James Beard awards; Best International Cookbook and Cookbook of the Year. Worldstudio principal, Mark Randall traveled with David on his research expeditions as team photographer to contribute photographs to Yucatán.

Design Ignites Change and the School of Visual Arts presented a panel to explore and discuss what designers can learn from how other fields measure the impact of socially driven projects and programs. How do you balance client work with pro bono offerings? Mark Randall, principal of Worldstudio was joined by Kristina Drury, founder and creative director of TYTHEdesign; David Frisco, principal of DFD: David Frisco Design and Chelsea Mauldin, director of the Public Policy Lab for a lively discussion about pro bono design services moderated by Adrienne Schmoeker of Catchafire. This event was hosted by desigNYC as part of Pro Bono Week.

Worldstudio principal Mark Randall, along with Kris Goddard from the NYC Department of Small Business Services, participated in a panel discussion moderated by David Burney, Pratt Institute. Sappi Ideas That Matter – judging
Mark Randall was a judge for the Sappi Ideas That Matter Program in Boston. Grants totaling $250,000 were given to implement a designer’s pro-bono project for a non-profit organization.

Mark Randall lead a workshop; Leveraging Good Design to Build a Strong Brand which focused on how a well-designed brand identity contributes to the success of a nonprofit or social venture. The session, for the Makers Institute, took place at the Centre for Social Innovation in New York.

Mark spoke at SUNY The College at Old Westbury in their Visiting Artists program. The school, located 20 miles outside of New York, is one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country with a mission tied to social justice.

Mark Randall of Worldstudio and David Gibson of Two Twelve were the co-chairs of the AIGA Centennial Gala held at the Grand Hyatt New York. The AIGA Gala is an annual celebration to honor the distinguished practitioners, educators and role models whose creativity, intelligence, perception and skill have inspired and shaped the entire design profession.

Opening night of Seán Curran Company’s 15th Anniversary season at the Joyce Theater in New York. Mark Randall designed projected titles for “Fireweather or the Mission of Virgil” a dance piece by choreographer Seán Curran with music by contemporary composer Charles Wuorinen, inspired by Dante’s “Inferno.”

Mark was on a panel for the Design Rebels Unite Symposium and book launch for The Design Activist’s Handbook in New York City. The panel included authors Michelle Taute and Noah Scalin, Another Limited Rebellion along with Sheri Koetting, mslk and Daniel Schutzsmith, Mark & Phil. Mark, Sherri and Daniel are featured in the book.

Seán Curran Company – world premiere
World premiere of “Travel Songs” at the Debartolo Performing Arts Center at the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana. Mark designed projections for “Travel Songs” an evening length work created by choreographer Seán Curran and the Seán Curran Company in collaboration with the Grammy Award winning acapella group The King’s Singers.
